Valentine's Day

Why Valentine's Day is bittersweet

Valentine's Day, it occurs every February, and it is that time of year where that little winged boy wrapped in a sorry get-up shoots a woman on the posterior with an arrow, and she magically falls in love (end joke), but seriously it's the most romantic holiday of the year.

That is cause for celebration, isn't it? After all, the holiday was named after two Christian martyrs named, "Valentine". I liked that little bit of trivia.

Well, there are many advantages to Valentines Day. For one, yes, it is the marketers dream holiday. It is insanely marketed, it can be seen as a self-serving holiday with no greater aim than to sell a couple of cards, flowers, and little french chocolate delicacies. Guess what, though? It works. For every person with their bottom lip pouted out about how Hall-mark is "stealing" your money with this holiday, you are still the one pumping life into those retailers. You are still the one giving life to the legend and infamy of V-day by talking about how it is consumerism, at its finest. And the ad guys, they wouldn't have it any other way.

That advantage I talked about, here goes. Valentines Day, it is a holiday where you have an excuse to go out, treat your wife or husband to a nice evening, light the candles, have the soft violin playing in the background, and you get your chance to be as mushy as you want to be. Many argue that love should be expressed on every day of the year, and not just on a little date in mid February. I can see the point being made. But where's the fun in that? The true dare-devil in most men likes to hold out on their undying and devoted love toward their significant other, by cramming down their love, on one solitude evening of the year.

That's just the way we roll. Don't ask me why.

The U.S. Greeting Card association ranks Valentine's Day, the second-highest card-sending day of the year, (behind Christmas) the most current count has 1 billion cards a year being sent out annually. For a crummy holiday, it sure is bringing in some heavy ROI. Women purchase roughly 85% of all valentines. What a tear-jerker.

Personally, I feel that Valentines Day is a nice little holiday to have around because it helps men, and women work on their romantic skills. So many days we are so busy being busy, we forget the fire, passion and romance in our daily lives. This is a good holiday reserved for the love-lorn to brush up on their suaveness.

Bittersweet? Well, I think it can be construed that way. Let's be
