trust in God's Word. Now, this may make you uncomfortable, because those "others" will seem to have something you don't, they will appear to be filled with a joy that you, as yet, do not understand. And, sadly, they may speak using a kind of jargon that takes some getting used to. But you will see, almost immediately, that regardless of their circumstances, those people who rely on God's Word, are benefiting from a reliable relationship with God, are comforted by God's presence in their lives, are confident in the direction God is moving in their lives.
2. In the medium term. Once you see the effect of God's Word in your life and the life of others, you need to make a commitment. You can test the reliability of the Bible only so far without doing what it says. Jesus is clear. Realize that you are a sinner, repent of your sinful nature, accept Jesus and His sacrifice as the only redemptive path to salvation. You must begin a personal relationship with the author of the Bible. Once you have made that step, the power of Scripture will become evident in your life. All of a sudden, the Holy Spirit can assist you to understand scripture like you never thought you would be able to on your own power.
3. In the long term. Study the Bible and you will discover the richness of its beauty and the power of its truth. In spiritual battles, you will discover that you are armed with weapons that make nuclear warheads seem like potato guns. Satan will flee from the Word, rightly used. Deception falls apart in the light of God's Word. The Bible is a scalpel that can rightly divide truth from imperfection.
Now, I know that some of my readers may have been hoping for a long discussion of apologetics, or the defense of Bible truths using logic. I have to confess in finding a great deal of delight in apologetics in general, but I also feel strongly that no one ever got argued into trusting God. I'll leave that for some other time. Yes, the Bible has been validated archaeologically. Yes, the Bible is a magnificent work of literature that has depth of meaning and insight and truth. Yes, the Bible has wonderful elements of understanding the universe beyond the ability of people who lived two millennia ago to possibly have known. Yes, the Bible has a perfection of mathematical order and symmetry that goes way beyond what statistics and logic would allow. Yes, the Bible has a 100% accuracy rate in predicting future events from the point of view of its ancient authors.
But more than all that, the reason why the Bible is trustworthy and reliable is that it can change lives. It can change you.
