Traveling does not have to be a stressful experience, even if there are so many factors that are out of your control, especially after recent world events. The key to successful travel with a minimum amount of stress is to focus on the aspects that you can control. As for factors that you can't control, you can still plan for them.
While you can't control other people, rules and regulations (or time delays), you can at least prepare yourself for these factors. Leave plenty of time for arrival and departure, and inform yourself well about the mode of transportation and the regulations associated. Even if you are a frequent traveler, it helps to check out information online about your mode of transportation, because rules can change frequently.
In addition, research your destination, especially if you are traveling internationally. You need to be aware of the culture and etiquette, in order to avoid embarrassing scenarios. This does not only include researching proper attire, but etiquette as well. For example, tipping is required in some place, while it is considered a faux pas in others.
This research can be done on the Internet, by searching out travel sites or travel forums. You can also pick up magazines at your local bookstore. In addition, if you know someone that has been to your destination - even better. It would be a good idea to ask that person about his or her experiences. Research visa and passport requirements (if applicable), and don't forget to check out the climate as well. Travel agencies can help you with these tasks.
No matter where your destination is, pack as light as you can. Don't bring anything that you can't afford to lose or replace. If traveling by plane, check out what is allowed to bring on board. You won't be doing yourself or other travelers any favors by holding up the line having to argue about throwing out something.
On the other hand, you should never argue with the authorities at all, and it is your responsibility to know upfront what you can bring. This goes under the circumstances that are beyond your control. Trains have also certain regulations on what you can bring, make sure you familiarize yourself with those as well.
It is also a good idea to keep money and credit cards in separate places. Don't put them all in one place. Even better, use travelers checks and make sure you keep copies of the numbers in several places as well.
While on the road (or in the air), relax and enjoy the fact that you are experiencing a change of scenery and interaction with other people. If something unforeseen happens, just ask yourself: is this something I can control? If it is not, just take a deep breath and remember: this too shall pass.
Once you are at your destination, take some time to settle in. With all the planning you did to get there, you deserve to simply do nothing for a while. Whether that takes a few hours or a day or two, is up to you and depends on your personality.
