Vacations are meant to be soothing and relaxing. They should be a time to recharge your batteries not wear them out. To get your stay in a hotel off to a good start and to help yourself feel organized and comfortable spend 15 minutes or so unpacking and settling in. A small investment of time as soon as you arrive will pay huge dividends during your stay.
Before you do anything check that everything is working in the room. Try the TV, the phones, the lights and check out the bathroom. There is nothing more annoying than having to repack your cases if you have to change rooms. Check the room thermostat and set it to your preferred temperature. Open the curtains to let the sun shine in.
Once you are sure you are happy with the room unpack your suitcase. Empty it completely and pack it away in the closet neatly and out of sight. Don't be tempted to keep some of your things in your case and to leave it hanging around your room. It will only clutter up your room and what seems like a time saver now will make your life more difficult later. Put all your clothes and shoes away neatly, just as you would at home.
Hotel toiletries can be great, many hotels now use quality brands. However, if in doubt bring your own. There is rarely a separate shampoo or conditioner and your hair will need it more than usual if you are in the sun or pool. Don't waste those precious vacation hours shopping at the drug store. Unpack all your toiletries and lay them out neatly in the bathroom where they can be found quickly and easily. Give the whole room a spritz with your favorite perfume for an added touch of luxury and familiarity.
If the bed has one of those nasty nylon covers pull it back. Fold it neatly along the bottom of the bed. Get rid of that overly busy pattern as soon as possible. Check the pillows on the bed. If they are not comfortable call housekeeping and ask for more. The hotel wants you to be comfortable and to enjoy your stay. Don't be afraid to ask for what you need.
Check that the time is correct on the alarm clock. Set your alarms for the morning and tune the radio to your own choice of station. If you need one, arrange your wakeup call now, before you have a chance to forget.
If the room has a fridge now is a great time to stock it with water. If there is no fridge fill the ice bucket and keep some bottled water in there. Most hotels have vending machines or a lobby shop. Stock up now rather than waiting until the middle of the night. It is also a great idea to have a few healthy snacks in your room and maybe an indulgent treat or two. You are after all on vacation!
