Being obese or overweight need not stop one from exercising. In fact, there are many safe options to consider.
1. Swimming In A Pool.
The natural buoyancy of water takes away the stress that high-impact sports (like running) have on the knee joints. So, this is a good way for you to get some cardio-vascular workout. In addition, the cooling water environment helps to take away the oft-dreaded scenario of struggling and perspiring badly under physical exertion.
2. Aqua Aerobics.
Like swimming, this form of exercise is low impact due to the floatation effect in the pool. The exercises are more for stretching and muscle toning.
3. Walking.
The important thing to note is to wear exercise shoes that are shock-absorbent. Walk at a slow pace that you are comfortable with, for about 100 - 200 metres for a start. As you become more used to it, you can consider increasing the distance gradually. Subsequently, you can also consider increasing the speed of walking.
Walking is a form of cardio-vascular exercise that is very flexible: You can do at any time and place convenient for you, and it does not require any special equipment or apparatus.
4. Exercise/Weight Machines.
These stationary machines are found in the gyms. They have fixtures that can be adjusted to fit your build and needs, for example, the height of the seat and the width of the bars. The actual amount of weight to be lifted can also be adjusted according to your level of competency.
Most of these weight machines can be used in a seated position, so there is no concern about impact on the joints while training the muscles. To build up your cardio-vascular strength, there are also machines such as those for rowing and low-impact step climbing. These machines allow you to preset the speed and intensity to a level that you are comfortable with.
5. Floor Exercises.
These include stretching and light calisthenics, as well as yoga. Meditation and breathing exercises can also be incorporated as part of the cooling down process after exercising.
The bottom line is: Find an exercise that you enjoy doing so that you can persevere. In the long run, you will definitely be able to reap the benefits.
