originating from Nazi-era experiments in nuclear weapons production), which exit the centrifuge through their respective discharge ports.
"Light" water is now discharged and disposed of, while the relatively smaller portion of "heavy" water is mixed with the heavy water discharges of other centrifuges. This accumulation of heavy water concentrations is then pumped once again into another concentrator centrifuge, and is again separated into relatively light and heavy discharges. Again the light and heavy phases exit from the machine and the heavy water is again subjected to further concentration.
This chain of concentration goes on and on until the heavy water gets so heavy that it cannot go any further. What started off as a few grams of radioactive solids mixed within literally tens of thousands of liters of water is now concentrated into perhaps a few liters of water. This final stage of water can now be evaporated into a dish, leaving a sometimes visibly glowing super-concentrated radioactive pile.
This pile can be harvested and put through other processes resulting in a weapons production capability the International Atomic Energy Agency has recently reported on.
Centrifuges Originally Made for Peaceful Applications
Centrifuges started initially as a peacetime application (fuels purification) and have once again, in the hands of certain pugilistic individuals, ended up as a tool of war.
Let us hope and pray this situation can be successfully defused, and that other peaceful centrifuge applications such as those used for the advancement of medicine and alternative fuels can be broadened for man's future benefit.
