Mean Ol' Mr. Pike
Northern Pike are probably the meanest and most predatory fish that I've introduced to you in this book. They have very tough upper and lower lips that make hook removing nearly impossible without pliers. They also have very small, but very sharp teeth to accompany their meanness. You should watch for these when retrieving Pike from the water. When removing the hook, you might want to have a towel in addition to the pliers. This is necessary because Pike also have very sharp gill plates that can cut you. The other purpose for a towel is so that you don't remove much of the vital slime that Northern Pike excrete in order to help themselves survive in the water. There are many types of lures that Pike will chase after. Since Northern Pike and Largemouth Bass are both predatory fish, most of these baits that I'm going to tell you about have already been mentioned in the last chapter. Here are some of the baits that a Pike will go after:
Buzz-Baits- As mentioned before, Buzz-Baits are designed to be a topwater lure. When fishing for pike, you should do no different than if you were fishing for bass. However, you might want to consider using a leader, which is a tough wire attachment that you can use when fishing. The leader will protect your line from being cut by the sharp gill plates, assuming that you tied a good knot in the first place.
Spinnerbaits- Use the same tactics with spinnerbaits as if you were fishing for bass, and include a wire leader just in case.
Artificial Mice and Frogs- Once again, when fishing for pike, use the same tactics as you would for bass. Be sure to include the wire leader.
Spoons- Determine the size of pike you're most likely to catch, then adjust the size of your spoon accordingly. You won't want to have a five-foot long spoon for a 20-inch pike. As a rule of thumb, remember this- the smaller the pike, the smaller the spoon, and vice-versa. Don't forget the wire leader.
Deep Divers- Deep divers are also useful in catching not only pike, but bass also. When fishing these, cast them out and let the bait do the work. Sometimes, if you are fishing in a weedbed, you'll feel a tug on your line. Most of the time it's just the weeds, but sometimes a pike will have grabbed onto your lure and wrapped it around the weeds. Don't forget about the wire leader. A lot of deep divers on the market today will incorporate one or more pellets of some sort of hard material inside the body of the deep diver to add sound to the performance
