The history of gambling

Gambling is not a recent sin that takes place in Las Vegas and in every other small town in the US. It has its place in history and it could be a great way to solve some disputes today, instead of battling it out.

In China, gambling has been reported about 2300 B.C. China might have even been the first to play with playing cards. They were shuffling paper about 900 A.D. So, it would make sense for them to shuffle their cards. And the playing cards didn't start portraying people on them until it reached the Mediterranean countries. They used ranks of royalty, which is what is still on a deck of playing cards used today.

Also in china and Hong Kong, it was common for people to gamble on everyday items in the late 1800s. There were times when they would gamble for bread, instead of just paying the asking price.
A pair of ivory dice were found and made sometime before 1500 B.C. in Egypt. And there are writings about gambling on tablets found at the pyramids at Giza.

King Olaf of Norway and King Olaf of Sweden came together in 1000 A.D. to decide who owned the district of Hising. And when they could not come to a decision, they rolled some dice and Norway won the district and both kings had let the dice be the final answer.

Gambling was banned during times of war in the Middle Ages by King Henry VIII of England. It became too much of a distraction for the soldiers that needed to be spending their time preparing for battle.

It is said that a mathematician, during the 17th century may have invented the wheel used for the Roulette game. Or it could have come from China. Roulette is French for "small wheel" updated by Francois and Louis Blanc. They invented a game called the "Single 0" in 1842. And is played in the US still today. In America, the "Double 0" was added and that version is called the American Roulette.

Throughout the centuries, there have been superstitions that one might believe to give them luck. Here are
a few. Good Luck!

When you throw dice and get "two ones", it is called Snake Eyes and it represents the devil.
And it is good luck to carry a toenail from a horned toad.
Never gamble with your legs crossed, You will cross out your luck.
Dogs are not allowed at the gambling table.
Always blow on your cards. You blow on dice to breathe life back into them.
And pass the dice when it rains.
Bad luck to count your chips.
where something dirty when you play poker, it keeps evil away.
If you are at a wood table, choose to sit so that you lay your cards with the grain and not against it.
Don't sing or whistle during the game.
Don't pick your cards up until all the cards have been dealt. Then pick them up with your right hand.
