Internet Writing & Blogging

Are traditional publishers necessary in the day of blogs and writing sites?

The internet has opened up great opportunities for writers whose voices would not be heard under normal circumstances. These writers have filled blogs and helped to create mass libraries on various writing sites. They have shared their knowledge, opinions, and ideas. Anyone who wishes to find information, literature, new stories, poems, and other works can do so with a few taps on the keyboard and a few clicks of the mouse.

But has the internet eliminated the need for traditional publishers?

What Traditional Publishers Provide Readers.
While the internet has provided a great deal of information, a lot of different options for writers, and a vast library of fiction and non-fiction resources, it has not removed the readers desire for traditional published materials. Books are still being sold. People still go to the library and the book store. There is something about a book that is easier to read then a computer screen, at least for most of us. It doesn't have the glow, the sun burn of the face, or the aching of the eyes. It can also be taken everywhere and read everywhere. While the internet is accessible in more and more locations, you still wouldn't read it on the subway or bus, or in the tub.

Newspapers and magazines offer quick read articles in specialized areas. They to can be read anywhere and are more mobile then laptops or computers. They can provide information on all sorts of things without having to search for it. They continue to be a good sell and show no signs of slowing down. While people have started reading the news and checking out a wide variety of sites, they don't feel that these things are replacing the printed material, but rather adding to it.

What Traditional Publishers Provide Writers.
Getting printed still carries a great deal more clout then having articles published online. Many people like the in your hand types of media and are more likely to give credit to an author who is a printed author verses one who makes a living online. This doesn't mean that an author in prints work is better, more researched, or even published with fewer errors. It is just that society gives a printed piece more clout.

Publishing with traditional publishers often provide better money, especially for the future. Once you are published once, the second time becomes easier, and easier. The more you write the more you are worth. You can make more and more money that way. Online, most of your earning will be over time. It will be harder and harder to get more and more money from your writing. It will always be worth about the same amount no matter where or how you bring it.

Online publishing is not changing the traditional market. Instead it is offering authors a way to be published without the difficult hunt to find a publisher that wants them. It makes it easier for people to get their feet wet, and for those with other passions to make money writing what they know and love. It is providing readers with another form of media and additional reading options. However, the day of blogs and writing sites, has not changed the need for traditional publishers.
