I voted yes on this issue and will discuss why but first i have to stipulate the conditions as the question is too non specific. I think that parents should raise their children without broadcast television. This is specifically to permit the viewing of movies and shows on DVD without the commercials included in broadcast (whether over air or wire) television.

The primary reason for this is that television is directly responsible for the decline in peoples ability to reason and the increase in body fat. The only thing good about television is the ability to reach millions of people with a single message at the same time. This single benefit has been outdone by the internet to such as degree as to consider it of null value from the televisions perspective.

Since the inception of television, people have spent more and more time in front of it watching programming designed to make them watch more television and speckled with advertisements which surprisingly enough are designed to tell people what to buy. By taking a look at the most watched programs through the decades you can easily see the decline in quality of programming as we went from news channels which showed news, to sitcoms, to talk shows and finally to reality television which is so far from reality that i cannot believe it is still allowed to continue under that name. Watch a few hours of Jerry Springer or American Idol and you should quickly see that the dregs of society are being paraded in front of you much as the freak show at the carnival used to do. Instead of news channels we now have consumer driven news which only shows what people want to see. There are many names for it being bantered around such as sensationalism but it does not matter what you call it as it is not news.

Advertisers spend billions of dollars each year with the companies spending the most showing a noticeable increase in profits directly proportional to the amount spent on television advertisements. The soda commercials are not designed to inform the consumer and give them a choice as to what they want to drink but to brain wash the consumer into believing in the need to acquire the product in order to survive, be rich, get women, etc. These commercials are getting more and more blatant in how they work and what they are trying to accomplish which is just another indicator as to how easy it is to play with consumers minds.

Allowing children to start watching broadcast television and to continue to
