If only the founding fathers of Valentines Day had selected February the 29th to hold their profit spinning day of love. Then at least we would only have to endure the torturous 24 hours once every four years. But alas, not so and this blessed event is thrust upon romantics and cynics alike annually. While my less than chipper introduction may suggest otherwise, I believe there is a lot to like about Valentines Day. Don't get me wrong, there is also a lot to loathe. The feelings that we have regarding this day usually depends on our status. I think my introduction screams of my singledom. After talking to similarly single friends I have concluded that Valentines day is much like an exclusive party. Those poor, neglected souls on the outside make fun and pick fault with it mercilessly when in reality their deepest wish is to be on the inside. For those on the inside everything is sunshine, kittens and gumdrop buttons (unless of course you forget the day and your Valentine goes unspoilt, but thats another story altogether). Valentines Day can never be described as wholly good or wholly bad, because it is a complex mix of the two that is really dependent on whether you have someone to love and love you in return (romantically that is, they tried to get this whole give love to your single friends thing happening but I don't know if that will ever get off the ground. Feels a little to me like a consolation prize).
So what do I like about Valentines Day? Where is the sweetness and goodness in it? The idea of a day of love when there is so much turmoil in the world is actually kind of refreshing. Every restaurant is booked, every row boat on the lake is hired,(if it weren't for Valentines Day I wouldn't even know that you can hire boats on the lake) every cinema is booked, (well for rom com's anyhow, if you are looking for blood, horror, Saw-esque like films where attractive teenagers are brutally slain by an unseen mutant, I wouldn't worry about getting to the ticket office early, you'll get in) and every corner of the beach is covered in couples. Every where you turn love is literally 'all around'. Even the news is filled with tales of love. It is nice to have a break in the broadcast away from all the death, war and sadness to hear about John and Joan who are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary or the man who organized some elaborate proposal with the help of the news in which we have to wait until the next nights broadcast to find out her answer (it's
