The growth of social networking sites has been more than impressive. These websites gain more and more power, and as a result, big companies like Microsoft are becoming invested in such websites. These social networking sites get hundreds of millions of hits and have hundreds of millions of webpages and members. This means that you have an immense audience to which you can market your business, your products, and/or your services.
MySpace is a great way to market your business. However, it is important to note that MySpace does not allow business pages. Therefore, if your MySpace page is flagged as a business page by MySpace staff, your page will be permanently deleted without warning. This, however, does not mean that you cannot market some business products or services on your MySpace page. All this means is that your MySpace page cannot exist primarily for the purpose of conducting business (at least it cannot appear this way to MySpace administrators). Therefore, make sure that there are a lot of personal touches on your MySpace page. Having personal touches on your MySpace page will also attract other non-business contacts that could turn into business contacts. Therefore, your efforts to add personal touches to your MySpace page could lead to sales and business.
When marketing on MySpace, you have to avoid spamming. This means that you should not blast an advertisement to all of your "friends" nor should you go into a group and blast advertisements. The best way to attract potential customers is by answering questions posted by other members in group rooms. When answering, give an intelligible, helpful answer and provide a link to your blog or website.
Do not get me wrong. Sending out a bulletin posting to all of your "friends" every so often will not hurt and will not offend any reasonable person. This is especially true if the person who is your "friend" knows that your page is motivated and geared by your business. Additionally, if you are a member of a group, the group leader will state what the rules are regarding posting advertisements. In the group allows such a thing, you might as well take advantage of it. However, keep in mind that if a group allows such a thing, it is probable that there are far more people posting advertisements than there are reading such advertisements. As such, you may be wasting your time. However, at the very least, you will be getting a one way link to your website if you put such a link in your advertisement.
The point is, with so many people in one place, you have a great chance of making some good business contacts and of obtaining some customers for your business. Experiment with your MySpace page and see what you come up with.
