How are retail sales clerks treated by customers?

I've been a sales clerk at an appliance and electronics store for almost two years now and the customers are by far the best part of my job. I have quite a few regulars who own construction companies, rental properties, restaurants, and various other types of businesses and I've gotten to know some of them quite well.

I really couldn't ask for an easier job. I get paid well to talk with nice people and help them with their purchases. My customers appreciate the fact that I know all the products my store has to offer, their model numbers, their current prices, dimensions, features, and exactly where each item is located in my store. To begin a sale, I simply ask a few questions to find out what product is right for them. Next, I chat with them about any number of personal things or maybe just the weather as I walk them to the product I think will best suit them. The customer usually asks me a question or two about the product's features or dimensions, then we're ready to close the deal.

I really don't have a sales pitch. I just take them to the appropriate product and the rest is up to them. I spend more time chatting with my customers about their children, grandchildren, and family lives than I do chatting about business. Sometimes I'm amazed that I make the kind of money I do for no more effort than my job requires. This will be our little secret though. I would hate for my employer to catch wind that I'm getting paid a small fortune each week to do nothing more than socialize with nice people.

Most of my customers are not only gems to deal with, but they're nice enough to refer their friends, relatives, and work associates to buy from me. What more could a girl ask for? Previously, I worked for more than a decade behind a desk crunching numbers all day. I hated accounting, but it was what I knew. The pay was okay, but no where near what I make as a commissioned sales person. My accounting job was also a huge bore. I rarely got to talk to anyone interesting and I spent all my time pounding away at a computer.

The best thing that ever happened to me was when a friend convinced me to try selling. She has been a sales girl for about ten years and I nearly choked when she told me how much money she was making. I knew that I had to at least give it a try. I'll never go back to accounting or any other job as long as I have the opportunity at commissioned sales. In the entire time I've worked at my current job, I can't recall one single customer that ever treated me with anything less than kindness and respect. I love my customers and they make my job a real treat.
