Selling art? How to get the best price

When I price a piece of art I have created, I charge the cost of all supplies and, at least double it. My personal medium is oil paintings but I have also created and sold ceramic work and jewelry. I start with stores in my area. I give store owner two prices. The one where I have doubled my cost, they buy the item outright for resale. The 2nd price is where I give a cost x3 price and offer that as consignment. Most often, stores have purchased the item, outright and I get cash that day. If the items sell and the owner likes the profit they made, you are in business. This gets you started and gets your work and your name out. Then do the same thing in the largest city around you.
It is tempting to walk into a gallery, look at the prices of paintings, and assume you can get the same price for your works of art. You can try it, and you may get thousands of dollars for your work. It's possible. My art work has never been that stunning. I have been able to maintain a steady income, though and been able to rely on it in times of great need.
