A question which has been voiced countless times, and answered mostly in the simple way which the Beatles pushed: "Money can't buy me love!". Frankly, while this is idealistically a lovely notion, there are a number of flaws which we must deal with.
It is obvious that money can only actually purchase physical items; material goods and, love and happiness both being human emotions, intangible and complicated, money can't actually buy either of them. This is clear: you can't stroll into a shop and ask for two pints of happiness and a packet of love. Of course not, and this is the ideological theory that is advocated by those who shy away from luxurious living.
The reality, it appears, is a little different. In the West we live in a specialized society- we are dependent on earning money in order to live. Fashion has caused a seemingly inherent need to be trendy, and fashionable clothes increasingly cost more and more. Luxurious living certainly provides a means for happiness, even if it is a purely superficial happiness.
Love is a difficult issue to address. The nature of love itself is intensely debated, and throughout literary history it has been repeatedly argued about. It is undoubtedly true that through money, it is possible to gain social attention and to make yourself more attractive to the opposite sex.
The debate continues to remain open, as ever, but it is clear that the ideological argument of 'money can't buy me love' is not wholly true, although it is undoubtedly a pearl of wisdom to be cherished for many generations.
