Going to school at night is not a decision one should make on a whim. The pursuit of earning, a degree from a quality university or college is a decision that needs a clear understanding of what your committee will be to yourself and your family. When I decided to return to school at night, I had not idea what I was getting myself in to. I thought it was going to be as those one-day classes I took for work.
By the middle of the semester, I was in trouble and sinking fast. I was taking two classes and working full time, while going home to raise three children. It was not easy and my grades were not great, but somehow I got through the mid-term and then the finale.
Making a committee to continue my education was the best decision I ever made. I have benefited from my degree in my current career that I would not have had I not gone back to school. If you are serious about going back to school to continue a degree or start one, then you really need to make a list of the pros and cons of going back. After you have finished your list, then you will need to do your homework on your school of choice.
A few questions you should answer before enrolling are. Is the school conducive for traveling back and forth at night? What time are my classes? How will I get home if I have to stay late or have a session? If you have a family, you will need to know if you can rely on your babysitter, or spouse. If you are a single parent, you will need people you can depend upon. The single people also need to know why they are making this commitment. If you are single, are you willing to devote the time and energy to school going to school at night?
The most important thing you should do is sit down with your family and explain to them that you might not be home early on certain days. Explain to them that you will need to spend quite time doing homework and that does not mean you do not love them but are doing something that will benefit them as well as you in the future.
Having said all of the above there is one finale thing to worry about. Can you afford it? Will you need to take out a loan, refinance your home? You will be amazed at how expense a good night school can be. Depending upon how many classes, you take per semester things could add up quickly, paying for classes, books, lab fees, and a computer if you do not have one, not to mention pen and paper and that is just the first year.
At first, it can be hard to adjust to not going home after work. As the years go by and depending upon how well you do you will come to appreciate being at night school. You will come to like doing homework again. You will be surprised to learn going back to night school is not as bad as you might have thought once you have a good plan written down.
