Who would dare utter the words exercise and vacation in the same breath? Not one of sound mind some might think. Times have changed and being health conscious can be incorporated into most facets of your life and yes that includes vacation. So toss the exercise gear into the luggage just in case. Don't make it a priority or it will seem like work but if the opportunity for exercise presents itself then take it.
I think we can all agree that most vacations aren't as relaxing as we want them to be. Planned activities and excursions will probably give you all the exercise you need and want on a vacation. Just go the extra mile when possible. Time away from home usually means lot of seeing and doing which means plenty of walking. Take advantage of the situation when planning out your mode of travel each day during the vacation. Take the chance to park your car and walk whenever possible. We did this for the lovely city of Saint Augustine in Florida. We found some free parking and took advantage of the trolley and walker friendly streets. The plan started out as convenience but we soon realized that we were getting quite the workout and it actually felt good.
If there is a hotel stay involved in your trip then do a little research and choose one that has some type of workout room or equipment. This may be a good idea if the vacation is strictly leisure and you are used to getting in some type of exercise daily. If walking or jogging is what you require then find a hotel that has a path or trail. If it is a bigger resort without a walking area then just walk the grounds. Done as a couple or group will make it much more enjoyable. If you really are a workout fan then choose a destination that is geared towards this cause. These vacations tend to require a lot of outdoor time.
You don't want it to feel like a chore so a positive attitude is a definite requirement. Especially if it's a family vacation with children involved. Don't let the exercise be a vacation buster. Plan ahead and come to an agreement with all travelers involved if this going to be a part of the vacation. Even if someone has to go solo with their exercising at least it keeps everybody happy. So as long as the vacation remains just that and the exercise is looked upon as a fringe benefit. Some may consider it a plus and you really never know how much you'll enjoy it unless you try it once.
