Pride, we have all heard the word in many different contexts over the course of our lives. In my own case it did at times actually seem contradictory. "Be proud of what you have accomplished, but no to proud because that is arrogance, and pride to the point of arrogance is well, evil." There are a lot of thing in life that we can be proud of. For example we can be proud of the things we accomplish like finishing a degree, or proud of a friend who kicks a bad habit, or a person who finally leaves a bad relationship after years of trying to make it work, or the friend who finally does make it work, or the completion of a project, work of art, losing weight, the list goes on and on, but proud of our sexuality? Isn't that kind of the same as being proud of some other inherent factor, like I am proud that I wear size twelve, or that I don't have a large furry caterpillar for an eyebrow? Maybe not, maybe it is all very different.
No movement, including the gay pride movement, can be complete without a symbol. After all countries, states, universities, even companies have flags that represent their community, why not the gay community. The rainbow flag that the gay community uses has a long history reaching back into pagan times. It was resurrected in the 1970's to be the symbol for the gay pride movement. What better represents people that are gay than a multi colored flag. After all the flag with its many colors is supposed to represent diversity. I am not sure what diversity though. Are they trying to represent diversity within the gay community? Perhaps, but that would be a little contradictory from a sexual perspective, after all they are classified as homosexuals. It could be racial diversity, but it seems in that case that the rainbow flag would be far better suited to the civil rights movement that preceded the gay pride movement. Considering the rainbow flag was used for a symbol of peace at one point in the early 20th century that would seem to make more sense. Don't misunderstand what I am saying it's a perfectly functional flag. No need to change it now. That would just confuse people who want to hate you just because they see a rainbow flag on your car so they cut you off. I mean honestly how many options are there at this point? A flag with genitals is out of the question, too many obscenity laws would have to be circumvented. A flag with an open closet door would be misleading too, because there have always been openly gay people, somewhere.
