In the early morning of December 11th, Nicole Ritchie was spotted driving down the wrong side of the 134 Freeway in Burbank, California. She had told the officer that she had taken a painkiller and had smoked marijuana before she had gotten into the car.
Meanwhile, her on-again, off-again best friend, Paris Hilton, had been sentenced to a 45 day jail sentence for driving with a suspended license that past summer.
While it is a gross understatement to say that neither Paris Hilton or Nicole Ritchie are my favorite people, even I will admit that Nicole received a slap on the wrist when she should have been served with jail time. While Paris Hilton had been speeding before she was pulled over, driving down the wrong side of a road as Nicole Ritchie had done is a much more surefire way for other motorists to get killed.
It appears to me as if the judge who convicted Paris Hilton may have allowed their personal feelings bleed into their conviction of her than Nicole Ritchie's had, but that is no excuse for the fact that Nicole had been under the influence while driving for the second time and did not have to go to prison.
Keifer Sutherland is a celebrity because he actually built his career on his own talent and hard work, not because he is the son of a well known and well respected actor. He was convicted of a second DUI in the same month that Ritchie was arrested, and was served with 48 days in jail, which included his birthday, Christmas, and New Year's.
Something about this just does not compute with me. Why is it that her partner in crime on the reality show "The Simple Life" was thrown in the clink but not Nicole? Did the judge who sentenced Paris Hilton happen to be on vacation that day? It does not seem like a just sentence to me whatsoever.
This is a glaring example of the fact that some rules just do not apply in Hollywood. The fact that someone who is rich and famous for pretty much no reason at all could have escaped two DUI charges with such little punishment, when someone who did not have nearly as much money at their disposal shows just how much money talks in this country.
