In today's world, Christian teens may be perceived as a group of stifled young people who never get out and never have any fun. It's true that Christian teens have high standards when compared to the general teen population, but this doesn't mean they can't have a good time. Dating is a great way for teens to practice building friendships and improving interpersonal skills. There are a few common dating rules for Christian teens that can make dating a fun and appropriate activity for everyone involved.
AGE
When is it appropriate for a Christian teen to start dating? One of the most common and basic dating rules involves setting a predetermined age at which teens may begin to date. This age varies from group to group, but parents and church leaders generally agree on an age somewhere between fourteen and eighteen years old. Kids that begin dating at earlier ages are at a greater risk of getting hurt or getting into trouble because they don't have the maturity of older teens. Setting a qualifying age gives teens a chance to decide who they are and what they stand for before they are faced with trying to understand deeper levels of relationships with others.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
The foundation of appropriate Christian dating must begin with the parents. Parents and teens should not be afraid to keep the lines of communication open. Parents, make sure you remember to use the words who, when, and where. Teens, remember that your parents have your best interest at heart, and answering their questions truthfully is as much for your protection as it is for your parents' peace of mind. It's also important that parents make sure they get to know and appreciate the people their teens choose to spend time with. Although it's important to give teens their space, it's also important to show interest and stay involved in their lives. Parents should encourage, facilitate, and provide opportunities for their teens to have social experiences with their peers.
SIMILAR MORALS AND VALUES
Christian teens are also commonly encouraged to date those that have the same morals and values as they do. This is not meant to exclude or judge other kids, but it's a way to increase the safety and protection (both physically and spiritually) of Christian teens. Key attributes parents and teens should be aware of when choosing appropriate peer groups are respect for authority, modest dress, the absence of drug and alcohol use, reasonable ideas about curfew, and a solid understanding of right and
