Reflections: Staying positive

Attitude Shapes Life

Attitude - what does it mean? Webster's dictionary says this: "Attitude, a concept of psychology. Attitudes are positive, negative, or neutral views of a person, behavior or event."

A positive attitude got me through many times in my life, No matter what happened to me, I could pick up on my own ability to rely on the positive side of life. Not all things are bad news in life, although there always seems to be an abundance of evil events. I like to think that behind every piece of bad news, something good is happening somewhere.

When a small child, I somehow I knew that when a grownup person touched me in a personal place, I knew it was wrong, but I looked for the good side of that person. I liked him for the good things he did and was able to forgive him for what I knew to be wrong.

On a lighter note, when I was nine, my father told me , "it's time for you to learn how to help milk the cows." When the old cow kicked me, I landed in the gutter, spilled all the milk I had managed to get, got manure all over my clothes and I ran to the house crying. Papa took me by the hand and led me back to the barn to try again. He said, "Don't let Bessie scare you. You can do this." And with a more positive attitude I got my next pail full of milk.

When I was 61 years of age, a heart attack almost stopped my life, but with determination and a positive attitude, I came through it. I am the last of 12 siblings, now 87 years old, and I firmly believe that a positive attitude had made my life this long, even though my eleven sisters and brothers died, most of them before the age of 60.

At age 70, I began a new home business. Starting from scratch, I learned how to find my markets, learned a bookkeeping program, set a goal, and with a positive attitude, I had craft magazines publishing my designs. I had a lucrative business going which provided me with added income. Then at age 83, I had my first book published.

Attitudes are shaped by information, a healthy society and community where we live, all of which have a positive effect in shaping our lives. To become successful in life, you must think success. That's the same as thinking positive.
