A professional model, who weighs in under the specific weight regulations, should not be banned from making a living. This seems a bit extreme to keep a model from working because of her weight. After all, isn't it her weight in itself, that gives her a career in modeling?

Thin models has been the source of many horror stories in the modeling industry. However, this particular topic cannot be divided in such black and white terms. There are gray areas that should be examined to determine the reasons as to why a model's weight has dropped.

The very idea for designers to showcase their clothing lines on live models rather than mannequins was for the purpose of showing a potential buyer how the fabrics look and move with the natural body. As the model walks, a buyer can see how the fabric flows, hence making the decision to buy thousands of garments to be sold in retail stores across the country.

The purpose of using thin models is mainly to accentuate the clothing instead of the model. A model is to appear without form so the eyes will focus only on the designer's clothing line.

Of course, the modeling industry exploded into a multi million-dollar business over the years and as the industry grew, the stress for models to stay thin grew out of control.
More and more beautiful girls were coming from all over the world to seek careers in fashion modeling, but the competition grew even more with stiff regulations on weight.

In time, the requirements became more competitive. To be considered a top professional model required not only being thin, but also the taller the better. All of sudden, more and more gorgeous faces were coming onto the modeling scene, and making names for themselves. The competition continued to grow. A top working model had to be tall, thin and beautiful.

Models strived to meet the criteria so they could land the high paying jobs, but the pressures were so great, that sadly at times became life-threatening situations for some. Young girls, so determined to get the job, starved themselves in order to keep the weight down. In some cases, girls not only lost the job, but lost their lives in order to stay thin, using drugs, diet pills and other vices to stay competitive in the business.

It is one thing to aim high and be the best you can be in your field of work, but in my opinion, if a beautiful model has all the ingredients to be a professional fashion model, she will sell the clothes she parades
