History and tradition of Christmas Cards

The History of Christmas Cards
Christmas Cards were first passed around in Great Britain, during the 1840's. They began as letters written by children to their families. With the invention of the steam press, these letters eventually became cards. The traditional Christmas card that we know today was first produced in 1843 by John Calcott Horsley. The first Christmas cards mailed in the United States began in 1846. These cards would be imported from European artisans. By 1875, Americans could buy locally made cards thanks to a German immigrant and Boston lithographer, Louis Prang. Early cards were actually "penny postcards". Photographs as part of a family's Christmas card, began in 1902 by the Eastman Kodak Company. Today the Christmas cards have become part a multimillion dollar industry that reaches all corners of the earth.
