My workplace horror story took place a couple of years ago when I was working for a retail company. I was the only female in a work force of nearly forty men. I got along great with most of my coworkers, but I never quite fit in. That was okay though because I loved my job. However, my sales manager was a complete sexist jerk.
At first, we got along great, but then he started in with little nick names like Cupcake and Sweet Cheeks. I wasn't too crazy about it, but decided that it really wasn't such a big deal and maybe he was just trying to be friendly. It wouldn't have been a problem if he could have just stopped there. But, before long, I noticed that he was hanging around me a lot more than the guys and he seemed to be bumping into me an awful lot, so I tried to put a little more distance between us. If he would come near, then I would go the opposite direction.
My dodging tactics worked for a few days, but then he got clever. He would come near while I was talking to a customer, knowing that I couldn't walk away. Once the customer left, he would be at my side making comments about how nice I smelled or how much he loved the dress I was wearing. He was really starting to make me feel uncomfortable. The other guys were starting to notice too and they were making jokes. I didn't want his extra attention, but I wasn't sure at first how to tell him without feeling like a over-reacting fool.
Within a few days, he began making comments to me about how he was bored with his wife and that he was thinking about getting a divorce. He would put his arm around me and talk softly so that no one else could hear. To make matters worse, my manager's unwanted attentions came at the same time my sales increased drastically. I had been working my butt off to improve my sales, but the other men only thought that my manager was putting sales under my number because he was attracted to me. I didn't know what to do. I didn't want to cause problems, but I also didn't want things to get any further out of control. I stupidly decided to do nothing.
The next phase involved him sneaking up behind me and rubbing his hands across my shoulders and caressing my arms. At this point, I told him that I wasn't interested and that I wanted him to stop touching me. I told him that he was making me uncomfortable and I didn't appreciate it. He only saw this as a challenge. His comments quickly became openly vulgar and disgusting. He told me that he wanted
