Movie analysis: Scary Movie I

The original Scary Movie came out in 2000, as a spoof to the many teen horror flicks to come out of the late 1990s, predominantly "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Scream", but also parodying "The Blair Witch Project", "Halloween", and "Friday the 13th", in addition to many other film and television parodies. It was written and produced by the Wayans brothers, and directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans. The film's tagline was "No mercy. No shame. No sequel," which poked fun at the repeated sequels of many horror film franchises. However, when the second film came out, the tagline was "we lied", and there have since been four films made, with a fifth reported to be in production.

The film centered around six friends who were being stalked by a killer, due to the fact that they had run over a fisherman the previous Halloween and dumped his body in the river (a spoof of "I Know What You Did Last Summer"). The killer wears the mask that was used by the killers in the movie "Scream." Each character is hunted down and killed, although some characters are later brought back in the sequels.

The central characters of the film are all parodies of characters from other films, mainly "Scream" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer." The characters' names also poke fun at the names of the characters from those films, or they actors who played them. The main characters are as follows:

Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris) She is based upon the main character Sidney from "Scream" (hence the similar name Cindy) and Julie from "I Know". Her last name Campbell is taken from actress Neve Campbell, who played Sidney in the "Scream" trilogy. She is peppy and somewhat ditzy. She is one of only two characters to have appeared in all of the subsequent Scary Movie films.

Bobby Prinze (Jon Abrahams) He is based on Billy from "Scream" and Ray from "I Know". Bobby is similar to Billy not only in name but in personality. His last name is taken from actor Freddie Prinze, Jr, who played in "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Bobby is Cindy's boyfriend and is always being blamed for being the killer throughout the film. He is stabbed multiple times by Ray at the end of the film and dies as a result.

Brenda Meeks (Regina Hall) She is based upon Maureen from "Scream 2" and Karla from "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer". Her name is from a character in "Friday the 13th" named Brenda and the last name of a character in the first two "Scream" movies. She is killed by angry moviegoers in a cinema. Maureen from
