Vinyl is far better than Cd's.... they may be harder to store, but they are far superior in quality.
I remember my parents vinyl collection and the wonderful stereo-gram which was like a piece of furniture taking pride of place in the living room, before the TV took over. I remember the 7inch singles my mother used to play and I remember artistes like "Tom Jones", "Frank Sinatra" and "Al Martino" coming from the speakers, not blasting, but gently soothing the surrounds of our home. My mother got told off by my father for buying so many singles, but she was 10 years younger than he was and still loved dancing and so she rebelled against him and started to buy albums.... the first that I can remember was "Revolver" by the Beatles, I still have this album to this day.
Vinyl for me has always been a fascination, and I am loathed to replace many of my vinyls with Cd's, so much so, I invested in a phonographic player, albeit I don't play the vinyls all that often now.
I still have my first ever album I brought, "Babylon by Bus" Bob Marley and the Wailers, and my first single "Ben" by Michael Jackson.
This might sound sad, but from time to time I do go through my collection and categorise them into times of my life, especially when the 12inch singles came into fashion. I was always a little behind in the techno stuff, i.e. getting my own stereo and CD player, the one I currently have I got back in 1989.... and its still playing well, although I have lost the remote control. I went through a spate of buying the multicolored 12 inch singles that came out, one of which was "Strawberry Letter 22" by Brothers Johnson, it still gets me dancing at the ripe old age of "40 something"......
I keep all my vinyls up high in a cupboard, out of the way of the day light now, but often when friends come round they are fascinated in my collection and often have to get them out to play and reminisce about times past....
CD's are okay, but I know their life expectancy is not as good as the old vinyl, they are easier to store its true, but there is nothing more pleasurable to me than listening to the grooves of a vinyl record.
Long live the vinyl....
