Gratitude and thanks: Discovering those elements to be thankful for

It's a little known secret, but there does seem to be one big key to happiness. Something stands out above everything else as being essential for happiness, and for turning a bad thing into a good thing. That key is gratitude. If we are truly gracious for all that we have been given (big or small), then we begin to see everything in a more positive light, and this allows us to live happier, more fulfilled lives.

In some ways, happiness is about attitude. What kind of attitude do you have? If you tend to be more pessimistic and see the bad side of a situation, then chances are you'll have a lot more negative view on things and this will make you unhappier. If you only see the bad side of things, then how can we really be thankful for them? If we are not thankful for something, how can it bring us happiness?

This is the importance of having gratitude and giving thanks. It changes our attitudes and allows us to see the beauty and splendor in all things. It makes us happier people. It makes it easier to take the bad things in life in stride, and learn from them. Things don't always go the way we want them to, but if we can move past them, good things can be just around the corner. But we have to have the proper attitude for this to happen.

The great writer G.K. Chesterton once wrote, "I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought; and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder." Life a life that is based on having and displaying gratitude is a very powerful and inspiring thing. Not only does it help you, but it helps others around you to think about the good things in their life.

If we allow ourselves to give thanks for the small pleasures in life and see the positive in everything, then we are able to overcome the hardships of life. As William Shakespeare once wrote, "There is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so." If we change our attitude to one of gratitude and giving thanks, we can change our lives. This is just another thing to be thankful for.

It was once written, "The Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts. No Americans have been more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving." In every bad thing, there is something to be thankful for. In every small, minuscule detail of life, if you can find something about it that makes you thankful and makes you appreciate life, how much happier will you be?
