Affiliate marketing is a web-based marketing practice in which a business compensates an affiliate for selling the product of the business to consumers. In plain language, if you have a product that you want to sell and I sell it for you, you give me a commission. However, in order to become as profitable as possible, you (the product owner) make this same deal with many other affiliates. Therefore, you make money on every sale that your affiliates make, and your primary cost is the commission to each affiliate for their respective sales.

Businesses utilize this kind of business model because it is cost effective to them. Instead of having to advertise its product into many different markets and having to cultivate and develop trust among consumers, these businesses use affiliates to marketing their product to each affiliate's respective contingency. As a result, the business can penetrate many different markets at one time and advertising costs for the business are reduced.

There are many websites that offer products to you if you wish to engage in affiliate marketing. All you have to do is put in the words "affiliate marketing opportunities" or some combination of those words into your favorite search engine. However, finding the opportunity is only the first step. In order to sell the products of another business, you have to have the web traffic and the reputation to do so. In other words, if you do not have the web traffic necessary to sell your own product (if you have one), then you are not going have the ability to sell somebody else's product.

Basically, when somebody wants to buy a product from the business and you are an affiliate, you have a special affiliate link that the consumer needs to use. This link tracks your sales and thus, your commission is calculated by the amount of sales that are made via this link. Therefore, if you want to get paid as an affiliate, you need customers to visit your website and purchase the company's product using your affiliate link.

The good news about affiliate marketing is that it usually does not cost money for you to participate in an affiliate marketing program. A word of caution, if a company offers an affiliate marketing program that costs money, you should not participate in the program. The reason for this is that you are selling the product of another business, and you get paid only if you make a sale. Therefore, why should you be paying to participate in such a program? It is important to note that some companies require that you give them certain tax information so that they can report your earnings for their tax purposes. This tax information can include your address, your social security number, and other personal information. Therefore, if you do not feel comfortable giving a company this information, do not participate in that affiliate marketing program.

Affiliate marketing can be a profitable business that you establish on the internet. However, be aware that it takes time to establish and that, although not mandatory, a popular website and a customer list will be very helpful in getting sales.
