The basic principles of search engine optimization (SEO)

Search engine optimization is the process of making your internet site appear as the first result in search engines for specific key words. This is a difficult task that can take a large amount of time if you do it yourself. There are many companies that exist that promise to raise your search engine results. These companies charge a fee (usually on a recurring, monthly basis, like a subscription) for this service, and the truth is, some of these companies may not deliver of their promise.

Everything from the amount of traffic that comes to your website to the specific keyword that you are targeting will determine how high you are in the search engines. As an example, go to your favorite search engine and type in the word, words, or phrase that you are hoping to use or are currently using as your keywords. Once you submit these keywords, check to see how many web pages result. Some keywords will result in over one billion web pages and some will result in only a couple thousand web pages. The point is, the more popular the keyword, the harder it will be for your webpage to climb to the top of the ranks.

One of the best ways to climb the ranks quickly is to get people to link to your page. This is easier said then done because many times people will want a reciprocal link as a prerequisite of them linking to your page. A reciprocal link is a link between two websites to ensure mutual traffic. In other words, if website A wants a link to its website on website B, website A will have to put a link to website B on its website. The problem with reciprocal links is that they are very hard to manage. In other words, you have to constantly check the other web pages to make sure that your link is still on that webpage.

The best way to get links is to get maintenance free links. These links are called one way links. Basically, a one way link is a link to your website that comes from anther website without you having to reciprocate. Many people will not do this for free, and therefore, it will cost you money to get one way links. However, instead of spending money, you can create your own one way links. The best way to accomplish this is by writing articles. When you submit an article to a website, make sure that a link to your website is included in the text of the article.

As you build links, you will be building popularity and traffic. As such, you search engine position will be increased even more. And all of this is possible due to your link popularity. Therefore, building links is probably one of the best ways to optimize your search engine traffic.
