This is a very open ended question because each state has different heating demands. For example; in the North they demand more gas to heat their houses than the South demands to heat their houses. So, reasonably the Northern states should typically have higher heating costs over the Southern states. Never-the-less saving money on heating costs are the same where ever you live. Your demographics will determine how much money you can save.
One tip that is my favorite is to spend a little money now to properly insulate your house and that includes proper sealants for windows and doors. People tend to look at the price of properly insulating their homes as an unreasonable amount of money to pay. However, when you add up all those heating bills you will over time pay much more than the family who properly insulated their homes. It is a big savings.
Secondly, turn down your thermostat at night. Why does one need an exuberant amount of heat when they are snuggled up within their blankets? That is like burning your money in your furness.
Thirdly, if you are so lucky to own a traditional fire place, please first learn how to properly use it and then do so. By stock piling wood all summer long, and then sharing equal time between your furness and your fire place, you will cut your heating expenses.
Those are the major culprits when it comes to money lost due to heating costs. There are smaller things you can do that will save you some dough over time. They are; take shorter showers (if you have a gas water heater), better yet, take a bath (it uses less heated water), fill up the sink when you do the dishes (don't let the hot water run down the drain), always keep your windows and doors closed on a cold night, buy heavy curtains to cover up the windows, and many more little things you can do. Just be creative and remember safety first.
Think of an idea and put it to the test. Take a look at your bill and you then can decide if your savings is worth your efforts. Just remember to be creative, be optimistic, and to be safe while trying to save money on heating costs.
