There is only one phrase to describe a motorcyclist that does not wear a helmet and that is called "natural selection." Natural selection is the evolutionary concept that over the long term, the stronger and smarter will survive and those that lack the ability for self conservation will die out. Wearing a helmet when riding a motorcycle can prevent serious, life threatening injuries that could otherwise be avoided.

Wearing a helmet should be a choice, but a smart rider makes the choice to wear a helmet. If a rider gets on a motorcycle without a helmet, he (or she) is only hurting themselves if they get in an accident. They may be leaving behind children or a spouse if killed in an accident, but at least they will have the freedom of feeling the wind whipping through their hair. Seems like a fair trade off, right?

There are many choices to make when considering personal safety, regardless of what the activity is. If a person does not have their own safety on the top of their priority list, why would we have laws to tell them that they should? Seatbelts, helmets, it's all the same. Wear them or don't, but don't complain if you get hurt without using these simple safety devices.

Know that recuperating from a traumatic head injury is often a long, complicated process and rarely does a person who has sustained a major head injury recover fully. You may become a burden on your family instead of the provider. You may end up with serious limitations that jeopardize your quality of life. Know that you are making a choice to put your life and the livelihood of your family at risk when you do not use a helmet.

Wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle and set a good example for your children. Children are obligated to wear helmets, just when riding a bike. Your skull will crack almost as easily as a child's, especially at 60 miles an hour.

Laws do not protect us from ourselves, but practical thinking will. Think twice before riding a motorcycle without a helmet and you may save yourself from years of pain and recuperation. Riding with a helmet means that you will be free to ride your motorcycle for many years to come instead of watching them go by.
