Those who know me call me the eternal optimist.
I see every day as a new beginning.
I often think when I hear about a suicide ... if only he/she had waited, tomorrow things might have looked different.
Situations are ever changing and what may have looked rather gloomy in the dark of night, may look different in the light of morning.
One has to expect that not all things will go as planned. The path of life is not smooth, it is bumpy and curvy. Life would be pretty boring if everything we undertook turned out to be a success. Where would the challenge be? How would we ever feel satisfaction?
Take ten-pin bowling for instance.
The moment a bowler gets into the game, he/she dreams about scoring a perfect game. Bowling a 300. For most bowlers, that will never happen. But it is fun trying. And while they practice, they improve.
Part of the problem, of wanting to give up, is that we want results too soon. We don't have patience. Therefore it is good to keep the saying in mind Good things will happen to those who can wait' and Rome and Paris were not build in one day'.
And while we wait, we might want to consider that not succeeding does not necessarily mean failing. The path to success may bring a few pleasant surprises.
As an aspiring novel writer I too battle with impatience.
When will I find an agent? When will I find a publisher? Why, when I submit a manuscript, do I have to wait three to six months for a reply?
Then again, in this frustrating waiting time, I have met some interesting people and made some valuable friends. People I never would have met if I had not been a struggling writer. And surprise, surprise, they are struggling too.
Most of those people are resilient individuals. Giving up is not in their dictionary.
Oh, there might be the odd time when someone throws his/her hands up in the air and exclaims "I give up", but they don't really mean that. The next day they are back at being busy.
So, can we ever really give up?
If we truly love our craft, truly love creating something whatever that may be can we ever give up on it?
I know I can't. When I'm busy with a story, I literally wake up with it and go to bed with it. I could no more give up writing than I could give up breathing.
