Book Reviews: His Dark Materials, by Philip Pullman

by anything but a sorrow so deep that it seems as though it will never heal. Each one of the three books takes readers deeper and deeper into the worlds of Lyra, Pan, and Will. Pullman's characters become as real to us as the people with whom we spend every day, from Lyra and Will to Mary Malone to the Master of Jordan College, and the myriad other characters that inhabit the strange, fascinating universe which Pullman so deftly weaves. Few other stories have the power to draw a reader so far into what is happening and leave them craving so much more when it is finished.

Every story needs its villains, as well, and part of what makes His Dark Materials so captivating is that it's always difficult to tell who the real villain is. As the story progresses and characters like Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter reveal hidden facets of their personalities, readers are forced to question the assumptions they held about every part of the book previously. Pullman's story is one that causes the readers to change along with the plot, questioning everything as they go.

His Dark Materials are three books that should not be left on a shelf to collect dust. Fans of truly good writing will appreciate these books for the incredibly engaging works of fiction that they are, and once Lyra's world is entered, a bit of every reader's heart and imagination will remain.
