Testimonies: The highs and lows of being a housewife

Being a Housewife is Becoming the Lost Art:

Being a housewife, a full time homemaker, a stay at home mom and in some cases, you are crudely listed as unemployed, either way, is not as popular of a job these days, as it once was. I grew up with a mother always home. I also grew up thinking this was the only 'norm' for the way a little girl to grow up.

But since those days, I have grown through the years.I saw women protest on the sidewalk, burn bras and experience more than needed, the woes of sexual harassment, of the seventies, back in the days when 'boys will boys'. I have had daughters whom I would always tell, they could grow up and become whatever they want. And they did. I have a daughter who is a Nurse Practitioner and a daughter who chose to stay home with her children. At least, until they all go to school, after being in college and she did some Army time. They were always free to grow up and make their own choices and they did. All I tell them is what you do, you must enjoy and make the most out of it.

Though it is 2008, the world is ever changing. Jets can go faster than ever before, we all live longer than our parents, we send little robots to the planet Mars.We have computers, DVD player and MP3's. But I still am and almost always have been an 'at home' housewife. This I have been most of our married life and now, my health has chosen it for me. And I am OK with it. I try to make the most of what time I have at home. And I am proud of my accomplishments, though it may not be an answer to medical history or a winner of a research article, I am doing OK.

Being an 'at home' housewife, I can have the cleanest house on the block and it did not cost me any extra money in a maid service. I usually cook a lot of meals, we have not ordered a pizza to be delivered in years. I set a table with a tablecloth and we mostly eat at the table, together. I am always there, to back up everyone else with the chauffeuring of appointments or re-arranging schedules or paying the bills when time is not available for someone else to do. I can have all the laundry done and be free when everyone gets home.

When others complain how hard it is to do things, with work in the way, I do understand. It is hard to organize their lives. For the first time in my life, I am a member of the local committees and still have time before bed, to write a note to Helium, before I go bike riding every morning.

Is my life always this scheduled? Heck, no. I have those days too. I never feel comfortable when people belittle women for staying at home or them making statements of how they have nothing to do at home. It is nice to be at home, behind the scene of the family, helping them do their things. Being a housewife is not so bad. It is a choice, it is my choice. I like it. I find it very rewarding.

I thank goodness we live in a world where a woman can chose to be a doctor, teacher, mechanic, building contractor or a housewife. It is a good life and it is wonderful to have a choice.
