I find it rather difficult to come up with appropriate names for the pets I've owned, and the two cats I currently own now. Their names also divert off, into nicknames, that I end up calling them in addition to their given names.
I want the names I give my pets, to match their characteristics and the personalities. I keep thinking the light bulb will go on for me, that aha moment, that says, yes this is the perfect name for this pet. That doesn't seem to happen for me.
First, we had two small turtles. We named them Tequila and Tortilla. There is no Spanish Blood in my family history that I know of. Maybe those turtles acquired those names because they moved slowly?
Or maybe it was because I liked the idea of taking a siesta in the middle of the day, after eating a good meal. So it makes sense, that those two turtles were named after Spanish food. If we had gotten two more turtles we would have named them Tacos and Tamale.
Maybe it had something to do with those names, all started with the letter "T" just as Turtle does. Maybe I was hungry for Mexican food at the time when we first got our two small turtles. Actually I now have no idea, why those turtles got those particular names, but they did.
Their little turtle faces often looked like they were grinning. Since I never saw them frowning in unhappiness, I can only assume, they must have liked their names of Tequila and Tortilla.
After that came Spanky. She was a lovable and loving mixed beagle, who would occasionally break into a good old howl. She was always there greeting me at the door when I came home.
She got her name because of a rock group, called Spanky and our Gang, who seemed to be popular at the time. This wasn't from the TV show of the same name, as that was before my time. I think Spanky and our Gang might have had only one or two hit songs, but Spanky ended up with that name anyhow.
Then there was the Cockapoo, my late ex-husband and I had. We ended up naming her Wishkahuey. Yes, I know it's a strange name. That came from people we knew who played poker frequently. When one of the players had a losing hand, he would throw his cards down in disgust and frequently exclaim, Awishkahuey. That's not to say that Wishkahuey was a losing puppy, far from it!
My late ex-husband was 6'7" tall and I'm 5'2" tall. Wishkahuey would jump on top of the recliner so he could more easily pet her without having to bend down to her level. If her food bowl became empty, she'd grab it in her mouth and bring it to one of us,
