My love of Helium has resulted in my emails, blogs and pages having links back to the site. For the moment there are two ways of informing others about the site, the first is direct (sent to a specific person from you) and the other is indirect (banner posted on a web-page or other site). Maybe in the future Helium will add some more options for soliciting future members.
The first method is the 'Invite a Writer' link found in your 'about me' page. There are a couple other areas that hold this link as well. By clicking on 'Invite a Writer' you are sending a message containing a link to Helium, by email, to your friends. This is a very upfront approach and if used properly guarantees a sign up even if the joining person is only doing it to make you leave them alone about the site. There is a drawback to this though. If you email this link to your friends enough times they may not join, instead they could block you and your invite sits in 'spam' for the remainder of it's HTML life.
The second method is grabbing a banner from Helium and posting it on your personal web page or social networking account (IE MySpace). This banner does draw attention to the site, reaches more people and doesn't cost you friendships. The draw backs for a Helium Banner Ad are the fact that there isn't much way to tell whether anyone's been signing up, no cool little 'Writers I Invited' column and the banners do tend to take up space. All in all bannering my pages is my preferred method. I don't have to type messages begging people to join and participate, I don't have to worry about being tossed in the spam box and many many more people get wind of Helium.
Maybe in the future we'll have more options for attention getting however, the two we've got are working pretty great. Use both if you want, post a banner on your blog and post the 'Invite a Writer' link in every email you send. Never hurts to double up. Remember the more writers on Helium, the more we learn and ultimately the more articles there are to participate in. Grab a banner on your way out of this page and get posting! (Banners are found at: http://corp.helium.com/linkhel ium) The more the merrier so lets get soliciting.
