New Kids on the Block reunion from a fan's perspective

by AJ Stephenson

Created on: February 09, 2008

Say 'New Kids on the Block' to me and I go into a nostalgic trance. Back to the days when I'd rush home from school because I knew they were appearing on my favorite TV show, back to the days when my fiends and I knew every word to every song, and every step to every dance, when I could literally tell you Jordan Knights life story in 5 minutes flat, back to the days when New Kids ruled the world.

Its been 14 years and this is still my reaction. I consider 'Step by Step' the soundtrack to my teenage life, then just as I was getting too old to appreciate them any more it was all over. The music industry had moved on, the next boy band had arrived and the New Kids became prime fodder for 'whatever happened to...?' articles.

Now 14 years on , rumor has it the boys are coming back and I for one are not too sure if its the best idea. Will it be like when you loved a movie as a kid, then when you hear its coming out on DVD you rush out to buy it, only to be disappointed. Or worse still when you bump into an ex boyfriend, your first love, the love of your life, only to realize he's not the man of your dreams you've been day dreaming about.

Just recently here in the UK a couple of highly successful 90's bands have reformed, enjoying the same success as they did back in the day. The Spice girls had a Worldwide tour, reportedly earning each of them over 1 million. Then there was Take That. Take That took the boy band crown off New Kids back in the early nineties. They were greeted by the same hysteria all over the UK and Europe, and after a hugely successful 5 years they split, only to return tens years later. They stormed back into the UK charts with a couple of number ones, had a sellout tour, having to add extra dates. And they're still going strong now 3 years later.

But for every successful comeback there are several failures. who's to say that the older, more mature New Kids will set the music World alight this time around?

Each of the band members have had varying success since the bands split. Jonathan Knight left the world of showbiz altogether, choosing a career in real estate. Donnie's become quite a successful actor in both tv and movies, his successes include boomtown, band of brothers the saw franchise and most people don't realize he's the man who kills Bruce Willis in the 'sixth sense'. Jordan,Joe and Danny all chose to stay i the music business. Danny became a producer and has his own record label. Joe and Jordan both continued to release music, although neither
