Best baby gifts for new mothers

A new life is a cause for great rejoicing and people usually love to commemorate the occasion by giving gifts. From the sentimental to the practical, extravagant to "just a token", personal to generic, the range of baby gifts is endless.

As expectant parents, we were most appreciative of gifts that lessened the burden of providing for our baby. People joined together and purchased some essential, larger items for our baby such as a car seat, stroller, high chair and a wonderful chest of drawers that had an inbuilt bath in the top drawer (a fantastic space saver for small living environments). Other items in this vein would be a bassinet, change table, baby rocker, playpens and baby swings or walkers. It is great to receive these gifts (or the promise of them) early in your pregnancy, so that you don't go ahead and buy them yourself.

Presents that are always going to come in handy for newborns are basic clothing articles such as: singlets, jumpsuits, nightgowns, socks and jackets. Little ones can dirty several outfits in one day so multiple supplies are a must. Likewise, soft towels, face washers, bibs and nappies are things I never had in over supply. All of these gifts can be given at a baby shower (in white, lemon or mint-or bright colors if you are so inclined, if the sex of the baby is unannounced).

Hand knitted articles are especially cuddly for babies. I have discovered that jackets are the most practical article in this genre. They are easily pulled on and off, over baby's outfit. Hand knitted bootees, although very sweet, don't stay on little feet anywhere near as well as ordinary socks. Ribbon ties look beautiful, but fray and knot easily - twisted woolen cords are more practical fasteners. A hand knitted baby shawl can be a beautiful family heirloom, after it has been used to warm a little bundle.

When purchasing clothes for a newborn, it is great to remember that they are only "newborn" for a very short time. Babies grow so quickly. Think ahead to upcoming seasons and buy appropriately sized outfits, to ensure baby is well clad throughout the year. Another practical hint: white and pastel clothes can look sensational, but if baby is on the move, or eating solid food, the sensation is brief!

I was given a lovely hamper of toiletries for mother and baby, when I was pregnant. Practical, but with a little touch of luxury included in the form of bubble bath, body lotions and relaxing massage oil. Just make sure anything that is to touch baby's skin is suitable
