All about birthstones

drawn to your peridot birthstone. On a deeper level, peridot's gentle green fosters love and affection, faithfulness, gentleness and the kind of quiet strength that can openly admit feelings. In the ancient world, the only known peridots came from the island of St. John in the Red Sea and were said to be guarded by giant serpents which would prevent anyone from removing the stones from their island. This is the gemstone of the Israelite tribe of Simeon and also of the apostle Matthew.

SEPTEMBER
Blue, from softly pale to fiercely brilliant to midnight dark, is what comes to mind when most people say sapphire. And it is, blue in all its glory, as well as every other possible gem color, except red. Although some of the less well-known colors of sapphire are actually more rare and valuable, blue is still the most-loved and heavenly color. With sapphire as your birthstone, you are an individual, at home in all surroundings and your stone reflects this. You wear it everywhere, all the time and it is your talisman, as it has been a talisman for countless generations before you. If you dream of the blue of sapphires, your worries will be relieved by something outside you and you will see gain and good fortune.

OCTOBER
An opal will bring its wearer exactly what he deserves. If you are a good person, with a positive attitude, it will bring good things. If you are faithful in love, you will not be deceived, but the opal is as fragile as new love and must be treated with care and gentleness. The opal's flashing myriad of colors holds mystical energy. If it is your birthstone, it will enhance the natural empowerment and ambition that are your October birthright. Does that seem a bit overwhelming? Well, you can polish up your self-confidence or you can check out your alternate birthstone.

The tourmaline is a gem for life's adventurers. Are you adaptable and flexible? Do you love to travel? Do you see life in Technicolor? Nature gave tourmaline's clear crystal an almost endless variety of colors, from every shade of red and pink through orange, yellow, blues, into greens, often including two or three colors in the same gem. It is a sturdy stone, able to withstand daily wear.

NOVEMBER
Topaz is a powerful gem that appeals to the centered, family oriented and altruistic November natives. Though the traditional sherry wine color is what most people recognize as topaz, you may see it in all the colors of autumn light green, sky blue, red violet or amber yellow. Brazilian topaz is often heat-treated to range of soft-to-brilliant pink and laser treatment results in the blue of a fantasy sky. To tell a topaz from citrine (which is often substituted), rub the stone on a soft cloth to build a static charge. A true topaz will pick up small bits of tissue or fluff.

DECEMBER
Another two-gem month, December offers turquoise and zircon, turquoise being the most recognized by many people. A warm, opaque stone, it is found everywhere in the world and shares its name with its most favored color. It is the stone of a bold and confident person, one who is open, but who can also hear his own drummer.

If you prefer sparkle, think zircon. Not to be confused with zirconia (cubic or otherwise), natural zircon is a firestone. Its brilliance rivals diamond and the natural color can be anything from colorless to yellow, red, orange, red-brown, a range of greens and rare blue and blue-violet. This is a stone for a calm person with a harmonious and unselfish inner nature.
