US elections 2008: How the presidential race lines up after Super Tuesday

Hillary Clinton is in a tough fight for the Democratic nomination. Though she's the wife of a popular ex-president and has more political experience than her opponent, Barack Obama is proving to be a strong competitor. To make matters worse, Barack Obama has a lot of financial resources which means that she doesn't appear to have any financial advantage. On the Republican side, John McCain will almost certainly capture the nomination. The surprise for many was Mike Huckabee's strength in the south which knocked Mitt Romney out of the race. Actually, Mitt Rommney only suspended his campaign, but it looks increasingly unlikely that he'll be the GOP nominee.

One of the biggest surprises must be the close battle taking place for the Democratic nomination. Hillary Clinton was supposed to capture the nomination easily. What has gone wrong? One of the biggest reasons she isn't having as much success as she would have liked is clearly the public's desire for change. Barack Obama has been very good at portraying Hillary Clinton as a Washington insider. The Clinton and Bush families have controlled the White House since 1988. If Hillary Clinton is elected president, this will continue.

Also part of Barack Obama's success is his vast financial resources and his recent endorsements. One of his supporters, Oprah Winfrey, has many financial resources and an ability to attract votes that shouldn't be underestimated. The endorsements Barack Obama's campaign have picked up are another significant factor. They include those of Senator John Kerry, Senator Ted Kennedy, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Maria Shriver, the wife of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Those endorsements are from very prominent Democrats and can only help Barack Obama's campaign.

Privately, Hillary Clinton must be very disappointed with the endorsement from Ted Kennedy. When her husband was president, Ted Kennedy was involved in a difficult campaign for the first time in his life. His opponent was a wealthy and intelligent Republican by the name of Mitt Romney. Both Bill and Hillary Clinton lent tremendous support to Ted Kennedy's campaign and he was re-elected. Ted Kennedy's support of Barack Obama must have come as a big blow. Obviously, Ted Kennedy must think that Barack Obama has a good chance to capture the Democratic nomination as do many other voters.

On the Republican side, John McCain's success is a big surprise. After he won New Hampshire, he picked up momentum and won important
