One of the things you hear a lot about when you are pregnant is breastfeeding. It is very important for the baby to receive antibodies that will help their immunity through out life.
Wanting to be the good mother, I chose to breastfeed my daughter, but nature had a different plan. Once my milk came in, my daughter would not touch it. Not even a drop to 8 oz of formula. Unfortunately, I suffer from "Bad Cow Disease". Bad Cow Disease is not a real name, but there is a hereditary thing that caused my milk to curdle instantly and make it unhealthy and bad for consumption. My Grandmother and several Aunts had the same issue.
Of course, since I could no longer breastfeed, I didn't know what to do about the overly large breast full of bad milk, that hurt and throbbed every time my baby cried. I tried pumping the milk to reduce the discomfort and pressure, however, as the days passed, my breast got bigger and the pain got worse.
I went to the doctor and he told me that when you are trying to dry up the milk production you should never pump the milk to reduce the pressure, because in doing so, you are telling your body that you are still feeding. He suggested that I go and purchase a sports bra (a good one) that is very supportive, and put ice packs on my breast for 20 minutes, alternating one at a time every couple of hours for a few days and to take ibuprofen for the pain. He did state that it would hurt but after a few days the milk would dry up, the swelling would go down and the milk production would have ceased. I was fortunate that I only had to ice pack myself once for 20 minutes on each breast to accomplish the reduction in size and pain. I did continue to wear the sports bra for a few weeks until my breast returned to their normal size and I did not experience any more pain after the initial ice packing.
I'm sure that they now have medication that will help your body to stop production of milk, however, I highly suggest that if you choose to stop milk production either before or after breast feeding, try following the advice that my doctor gave me, it worked great and it worked fast. It's simple it's fast and you do not have to worry about side effects from medications.
