Adult education: Everything you need to know about night school

Night school has long been a boon for adults seeking self improvement. The reasons for seeking the classes are varied and very personal. However, new students are often surprised to find themselves seated next to likeminded people.

In fact the other students are the first pleasant surprise at night school. Students usually arrive full of questions, self-doubt and trepidation about sitting next to a room full of 19 year olds.

The reality is most states report the median age of adult education enrollees at around 34. It is not unusual to find retirees and senior citizens attending class but the current trend is towards a younger crowd. The largest group aged (16-50) account for over half of all students enrolling nationwide.

The majority of the students in any class tend to be female. 49 percent of women take adult learning classes compared to 43 percent of men. Often women take these classes preparing to reenter the workforce.

The next pleasant surprise it that this isn't high school all over again. No cliques, no cheerleaders, no gym class! Nobody's going to tell you you can't smoke on campus or harass you about skipping class one night.

Teachers come from a variety of backgrounds; retired professional business people or teachers. The fact is anyone with a useful skill can start regular courses and earn a decent living at it. I taught English as a second language overseas twice.

Rachel Ray, a huge media icon now, started out teaching a local cooking class.

Materials might be traditional text books or they might be generated by the teacher. For example, I created the course for my class called CASUAL CONVERSATIONS which grew to a twenty page booklet of student exercises. The cost of materials is often included in the tuition.

There are also challenges to the adult seeking night school classes that most minor children don't have. There's the fact that most of us have to have a job in the first place to pay for living expenses and bills screaming for attention.

Which brings me to children. Single parents (often mothers) have enough expenses without adding baby-sitting costs to class tuition. It's hard to break away two or three nights per week no matter how useful a class might be to building a future.

Thankfully, the growth of web-based industry brings adult education right into your own home. Classes from colleges to the local Y can be streamed in real time or downloaded for later review. There is a growing class of home entrepreneurs setting up teaching courses from their home as well.

Costs are frequently lower since materials are virtual instead of hard copy and the instructor does not have to rent a space or print material. The classroom lectern is little more than his desk and modem.

There are a wide variety of courses available online. The state government often maintains a database of established school, college or adult continuing education classes. The local Better Business Bureau should also have a list.

There is no reason a person seeking night classes or simply new skills cannot find a way to reach their goals. Higher learning is just a mouse click away.
