Behind the name: Elsa

the other two lions found homes at zoos, while Elsa was kept by Adamson. After extensive training on how to survive in the wild, Elsa was released by Adamson. In 1961, when Elsa the lion died from a tick borne disease, her young were taken in by Adamson once again.

Elsa Branstrom, a woman highly revered for her work and devotion to POW's, earned her the respect of soldiers who regard her as a patron saint of all militia. In Germany, several schools, streets and institutions are named for her.

The name Elsa is also shared by the fictional character, Dr. Elsa Schneider in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, played by Dublin born actress, Alison Doody. Dr. Elsa Schneider was employed by the Nazis to locate and retrieve a grail diary which contained the life's work of Indiana Jones' father, Professor Henry Jones. The selection of the name Elsa for this particular character was a particularly interesting choice, as the name suggests a noble and honourable character, and yet the character, while having certain ideals, ultimately sold out to the enemy Nazi's despite her affection for the Jones men.

Elsa is a name, that can only stand to gain in popularity over time, not only for it's beauty, but for the honourable nature and meaning of the name.
