do that.

And so, even as a child, I decided that I would align myself with that scripture in Psalms 119:46 that says, "I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed." And, I'm proud to say, that I believe that I have stuck to my convictions over the years.

When I was in high school, I wrote a conservative column in our school newspaper opposite a very liberal girl's column. We debated issues like homosexuality, abortion, the legalization of marijuana and prayer in schools.

I also helped to fight for the institution of a student Bible study, to be held on school grounds, despite many obstacles, such as the notion that our presence on campus was a slippery slope, in danger of eroding that all-precious, and yet completely imaginary "separation of church and state" clause. But, through civil disobedience and finally even legal action, I'm happy to say that twelve years after myself and my cofounders have left high school, that club still meets at my alma mater.

I've participated in the anti-abortion "life chain", campaigned for individuals I believed aligned their life with the word of God, and have written countless letters to the "crazy liberal in charge," also known as a newspaper's editor.

I won't say that standing up and being counted has always been an easy thing to do. I've been beat up, cussed out and even had rocks thrown at me, not to mention all the lovely notes that have been left on my car, over past bumper stickers and t-shirts. But, I think the most painful blow has occurred when a fellow Christian has said that we should just stay out of the political conversations. It's when they tell me that it is isolating for the church to publicly speak out on topics such as homosexuality, abortion, and sexual relationships outside the confines of marriage because it undermines the notion of tolerance. In a nut shell, it hurts the most when it's a fellow brother or sister in Christ that gives me "the look."

Still, I am encouraged by scriptures such as 2 Timothy, 1-8: "Be thou therefore not ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God."

And, I guess that says it all. I feel closest to God when I believe I am being a partaker of His gospel. Afflictions and all.

Of course, I'm not nave enough to think every thing I participate in will be successful. I've read the end of the Bible. And, I know this world is going to get a lot worse, before Jesus can come and make it all better.

Everyday I live, I expect that there will always be those Madeline Murray O'Hares and Gloria Steinems to contend with. But, I smile when I think that, for them, there will also be a few like me, with which to contend. And, I know that when my son looks at me, he'll share that same feeling that I had that his mother loves Jesus. And, that whatever she participates in is a choice to further align herself and her family with the cause of Christ.
