Staying healthy during pregnancy is more important then any other time in a woman's life. However, it is often harder to do. Many pregnant women experience morning sickness, fatigue, awkwardness, and have a more difficult time taking care of themselves during pregnancy then during the other times of her life. But because it is so important it is best to know how to do it.
Vitamins.
Vitamins are important at this time, especially ones with folic acid because it helps with the baby's brain development. These can be purchased for a few dollars at a drug store, usually being called pre-natal vitamins, and are often available for free at your doctor's office. Your doctor will most likely talk about your vitamin situation. If he or she doesn't, then bring it up to make sure you are doing what is best for your baby. On your first visit, bring the multi-vitamin that you have been taking.
Water.
Water is a huge need for the human body, whether pregnant or not. However, when pregnant it is particularly important. Often it is hard to convince yourself to drink more water, after all you will just have to go to the bathroom more and you are already doing that enough! But water is important for your body, for the baby, and it will help with a lot of common issues during pregnancy. Lots of water helps prevent headaches and lower the blood pressure, both are very important during this time.
Food.
It is important to have a very balanced diet at this time. You should make sure you are getting foods from all the food groups. While it is easy to use pregnancy as an excuse to partake of your every craving it isn't a good idea. You should limit your sweets and fats. You want to gain healthy weight and not have a lot of problems loosing it after the baby is born. It is also important to eat well even if feeling sick.
Exercise.
It is important to get exercise, even when tired and feeling ill. It will help with energy and keep you healthy. You have several options here. You can take a walk, since walking is inexpensive, and easy to do. You can join an exercise class for pregnant moms. This gives you a great way to socialize as well as stay fit and healthy. Or you can get an exercise video designed for pregnant moms. Stick with work outs geared toward pregnant moms, or ask your doctor for some help in setting up an appropriate exercise regimen.
Staying healthy while pregnant is very similar to staying healthy while not pregnant. However, you now have two reasons to work hard at being your healthiest. If you are one that does everything right anyway, just keep up the good work. If you are one who has bad nutritional habits, and don't exercise, now is a great time to start, just keep it slow. Also if you are a smoker or a drinker, quiting now can mean a lot to your baby. For two now. You are eating, exercising, and partaking of everything for two now, make it your best!
