When buying a dining table there are several considerations to take into account that will help you to purchase just the right table to suit you and your families needs. An ideal place to start the decision making process is to take a good look at the space in-which you will be going to place the table.
Take measurements so that you don't accidentally get a table of the wrong size. Bear in mind the space needed in-which to move comfortably around the table and move chairs in and out from under the table with ease. There is nothing worse than finding that you are squashed into a corner after dinner and need to push the table away from you each time you want to get up and move.
Next, have a think about the type of style of table which would suit the room and the interior design that is already present in the room. A metal table may suit a room which has a modern feel to it, whereas a pine table with turned legs would better suit a room with a country theme.
When you have done this have a look at the access that you have to the room. If you have a very old house then you may find that you have small doorways which a large table will not fit through. Where this is the case and you need a large table consider any other ways which you could get a table into the room. Perhaps you have large windows? Don't rule out using unconventional ways of getting your table into the desired room if you really need one of a significant size.
Another tip for getting a large table through a small space is to buy one with side 'leaves' which fold in or which slide under the table until you need to expand the table. These types of table are also great space savers whilst in position in a room as you can simply expand the table, or fold in the leaves to make space as you wish.
Your next concern will be your budget. Have an approximate figure in mind which you are willing to spend before you actually go shopping for your table and try to stick to it. If money is a concern then you may want to consider either purchasing a table from a sale or second hand.
The material which the table is made of will determine the type of care which it will need. Have a think about the practicality of buying a table which will require regular polishing and feeding of the wood. Some beautiful antique tables are like this and require plenty of tender loving care, but do you have the time or desire to do it justice?
If you have a busy household with young children in it then your main concern may be that the table is sturdy, practical and easy to wipe clean.
Another practical aspect to consider is whether you require your table to have added storage facilities such as side draws to store napkins and cutlery. Some tables even have a basket underneath them around a main stem in the center of them for storing items. These little extras can make a difference if you are pushed for space and storage.
A design feature to consider is the actual shape of the table. It may be that a particular shape will fit best in the dining room. Or, it could be that you want to consider aspects of feng shui and so buy a round table and avoid any pointed corners.
A round table will have the added advantage of meaning that there is no head of the table and all sitters are equal. There again, you may prefer to have a head of the table and like a rectangular or square shaped table.
When you see a table that you would like to buy in a showroom do ask the sales assistant, if it is to be delivered, whether it will arrive flat packed for you to assemble, or whether it will arrive completely set up and ready for use. Some of us are dab hands at do it yourself, whilst others prefer not to have to deal with such matters!
