How foodies use the Internet

Food is social. People like to share cooking and dining ideas. The Internet has opened up new opportunities for savoring foodie pleasures.

A cornucopia of food-focused web sites offer the delight of finding recipes, scouting restaurants, savoring food photos, or connecting with other amateur gourmets. What are the most popular online activities for foodies?

~ RECIPE SHARING

Are you looking for simple or tasty cuisine with the ingredients you have on hand? How about a slow cooker recipe using chicken? Or a vegetarian quiche? Or a special marinade for oven broiled steak? Perhaps you're seeking an ethnic recipe such as mideastern flatbread? Or sweet potatoes just like grandma used to make?

Popular recipe-sharing web sites such as www.allrecipes.com offer tried and tested home cooking ideas, contributed by their users. Browse thousands of recipes organized by popular collection. Search by type of preparation, ethnic origin, special dietary need, or main ingredient. Print or save your favorites. In recipe comments and reviews, other cooks have the chance to rate a recipe or to add their personal variation.

Another rapidly growing recipe sharing site, www.recipezaar.com, boasts that it's "Where the World's Recipes Are." The site sponsors cooking contests as well as hosting busy online forums. Lots of yummy recipes with photos may be searched by course, occasion, diet, ingredient, or cuisine.

~ BLOGGING

Amateur gourmets will relish an expanding number of food-focused online journals or weblogs. Many contributors write for www.cookingforengineers.com, geared toward the "analytical" cook. Food preparation is scrutinized in delicious detail, including mouth-watering photos of every step. Other articles discuss specialized topics such brining or knife sharpening. Visitors may find plenty of interaction in the forums.

Another popular team-written foodie blog, www.slashfood.com, presents interesting food-related gadgets and cookbook reviews, or weighs the taste and quality of packaged food. People who love to eat food with their eyes will appreciate the luscious photo gallery.

Notable blogs written by individuals include a pair of California-based sites: www.101cookbooks.com with its active forums, and Simply Recipes at www.elise.com/recipes/ tantalize the reader with author-tested recipes and food tips accompanied by luscious photos.

~ EATING

Looking for restaurant recommendations? Regional or state tourism web sites usually offer profiles of the restaurants in their communities,
