Have you often wondered what's behind a name, how this name came to be, and what it's meaning is? Perhaps you wanted to know the origin and meaning of your own name, or the name of a relative or close friend. I'm sure everyone at some point has asked themselves these questions and wanted to find answers! Who can possibly not want to know what's behind their own name, and how it originated!
Having the name "Evan" myself, my curiosity of what is behind this name is only natural. It is pronounced "eh-ven" in an American context. The name Evan is typically given to the masculine gender, and in extremely rare occasions used in the feminine connotation as a variant. Evan is a form of the name John, and the name is typically of Hebrew origin, fundamentally meaning, "God is gracious". It also has an origin of the Gaelic culture, Gaels being a people of Scotland, meaning "swift". Evan has also been known to be implemented in Greek and Celtic culture, meaning " young warrior" or "well-born".
The name is predominately used in English and Welsh speaking countries. It can also be the shortened version of the Greek name "Evangelos". In some cases, women who go by Evan are actually named Evangeline or Evangelina. There are also a few renditions of the name, accordingly, Evan and Even are linked to John the Baptist and used also in Britanny. These forms are also changed slightly in Ireland and Scotland with that of Eoghan, which are sometimes Ewan, Euan and Ewen. The Irish also have a rendition of Evan, and that is Evin. Although it does not seem to be related historically, but since it also means "swift", it is generally considered equal to the other renditions of "Evan".
In relation to popular culture, the name is pretty rare, although there are numerous movies with a character being named Evan. The most notable of these being, "Evan Almighty" and "Bruce Almighty", in which here Steve Carell plays "Evan Baxter" in both. "The Butterfly Effect" is also a well known movie where actor Ashton Kutcher plays the role of Evan Treborn. In the music industry, the name is rather rare amongst well-known musicians, but is evident. The singer Evan Lowenstein is part of the group "Evan and Jaron", two brothers who perform folk pop, and are readily recognized amongst many American music fans.
The popularity of the name has risen considerably over the past thirty years by almost six times, and seems to have a steady increase in popularity. Evan is currently ranked in the top 50 most popular names in the world, being most popular in Canada and Ireland.
