Tools and safety items every car owner should carry

There are essentials that you can place in your car to make your life a lot easier should the unexpected happen. Whether it's an accident, flat tire, or your car breaks down in bad weather there are a few inexpensive items to keep on hand to help you get through your experience.

Blanket Mostly for the colder months, though a blanket kept in your car during summer or spring gives you an instant plays to set when at a park or lake.

Disposable camera For accidents. Even though with cell phones today mostly having cameras, it's still better to be able to provide pictures from something that can't be digitally enhanced.

Knife Keep a sharp knife near by, preferably in the console or glove box (always be honest with a police officer if they ask about concealed weapons, and explain why you carry such a thing) in case you ever need to cut your seatbelt off.

Can of Ranch Style Beans (or other food editable cold) and a can opener and plastic spoon If the weather is extremely bad it may take a bit to get you out of the car safely. Having a non-perishable item is better then, say, a snack bar so you don't have to worry about expiration dates.

A couple bottles of water For the same reasons as food, water is a must have. It also comes in handy if you have children.

Extra pair of socks and sneakers wet feet get cold fast! Plus, sneakers are the preferred choice of shoes. You can get an inexpensive pair solely for the trunk of your car (or if slim enough, under the seats) and you're not out a lot of dough.

Book or Crossroad puzzle Some form of entertainment for you. Step away from the games on the cell phone. You may need that battery. Anything that will help you pass the time, so you're not thinking of just your situation.

For kids:

Diapers If you have a child in diapers, pack a couple of extra. A size larger is better. If you forget to change out the extra diapers as your baby grows, a small diaper will only bring more heartache.

Formula If you're little one is young (even under two years old) a small can of formula (preferably the liquid ready kind) is an essential. Though some babies over a year old won't particular care for the taste of formula still, they will drink it, thus providing them with the nourishment they need.

Car Toys Paper and pen works great for toddlers and older children. For smaller kids, a couple of cheap toys would provide blessed relief as the time ticks by.

Hopefully you'll never need these items, but it is better to be prepared in case you do. You can get a plastic container in a variety of sizes at Wal-Mart or Dollar General for next to nothing. And pack your items inside for neat trunk storage or under your seats.
