had been the one to come up with the shopping ruse years ago so that they could converse in public without any harm coming to her good name. So far their system worked for no one could fault them for meeting on a public street and conversing, because it would be impolite not to do so.
Each time they met she would always try to convince Nathan that he should just tell the whole of society the truth about his so-called reputation and let them know in no certain terms that they were wrong about him. But every time she brought up the subject, the thirty year old rogue would wink at her with that mischievous sparkle in his eyes and reply,
"Let them think what they will. I have exceptions to that."
Olivia checked her timepiece in her reticule and frowned when she realized that Nathan had not shown at the scheduled time. He had to be at least one half hour late. She began to pace and began fretting wondering if something awful may have occurred. She bit her lip and chewed her nails as she craned her neck trying to see his face in ever growing crowd. Just as she was about to give up, he finally showed.
Nathan sauntered over to her with his usual slanted grin in place and the mischievous twinkle in his eyes and struck up the normal polite conversation by being gentleman enough to help her with her packages. And, once he completed the task, she reminded him about the reason why she wanted to speak with him.
"Nathan why do you continue to allow society to believe that you are some devil that lures innocent maidens to their demise? Why do not just explain to everyone what you are truly doing when you disappear from town?"
Nathan refrained from sighing. Every time Livvie tried to convince him that he should redeem himself to people that could care less about his existence. Those same people that treated her terribly just because she did not have the preconceived beauty of pale blond ringlets and the pale unblemished skin to go with it. He did not understand why she tried to get him to kowtow those who had not accepted her for who she was.
As he gazed down upon her upturned face with the green flecked hazel eyes and dark blond locks that barely held a curl, he saw what others failed to see. That she had what could only be described as true inner beauty. She accepted him for who he was. Even though she always over looked his more human traits, the fact that he had more than his fair share of ladies in his life.
